In the Lady Garden is a rebellious engaging one-woman comedy drama from The Lady Gardeners. It is hilarious, bold and unfiltered, but also challenging and poignant.
The play encourages audiences to see women in all their complexities and strengths and is a reminder that older women have stories worth telling. The play tackles subjects rarely discussed in theatre including what it was like to be a girl in the 1950s and 60s, the menopause and the invisibility of women as they grow older.
Written by Babs Horton (Simon & Schuster) the play explores ageing, gender and societal expectations.
Alice, the central character, is intelligent, resourceful and compassionate despite having her wings clipped by a narrow religious education, a suffocating marriage and the constraints imposed by the patriarchy.
In her late sixties, Alice finds herself in a police holding cell, awaiting the arrival of a solicitor. Here she looks back on her life and the people and circumstances that have shaped and influenced her. Will she finally throw off the cloak of invisibility and embrace the world on her own terms?
